Residential Mailboxes or Address Plaques need to adhere to certain standards. You cannot place your curbside mailbox anywhere. They have to be present in a particular location near the curb and also at a particular height at which they will be easily accessible to the postman. Normally mail carriers expect the box to be at a height of about 42 inches to 46 inches measuring from the pavement to the bottom edge of the mailbox.

If it is not properly placed, you risk losing your mail or your mail not being delivered. Always ensure you contact the local carrier or the post office to ensure correct location. The address number in your Address Plaques should be clearly marked on the flag side of the mailbox in a contrasting color. The markings should be at least one inch tall.
